Guru of the Shri Maha Kali Devi Mandir (Albion, Guyana)
Pujarie Jamsie Naidu (1913-1997)
Pujarie
Naidu of Kali Ammaa Mandir at Albion in Guyana lives in the memory of
devotees as a fearless leader and teacher. Known lovingly by one and
all as Uncle Paploo, Pujarie Naidu practiced and preserved Mariamman
temple traditions by training young devotees to perform karakam pujas
and give cures and remedies. As a social reformer, he brought women to
the forefront as marlu pujaries, trained devotees of all castes to
serve as pujaries, accepted English as a temple language, and welcomed
Hindus and people of other cultures to Kali Ammaa Pujas. A charismatic
and gifted Pujarie, Uncle Paploo was bold and ahead of his time when he
intiated the use of traditional Mariamman healing traditions in the
treatment of mental health patients in the western psychiatric
institutions. He is respected in all lands as gifted healer, brilliant
thinker, and visionary leader of Indo-Caribbean people.
